Tasks
Work context: The Research Group for Internet and Society at TU Berlin is looking for a research assistant to conduct independent research and assist in teaching. The position holder will support our research and teaching on design decisions in algorithmic systems in their interaction with human values, attitudes, behaviour and rules. The focus is on algorithmic systems with impacts on citizens and users, such as automated decision-making systems, online platforms, or software that supports sensitive organisational functions such as internal reporting and compliance. These systems are usually based on the processing of large amounts of data and involve machine learning or other Al. We understand algorithmic systems as part of larger socio-technical systems and look for principles, architectures and parameters that have been shown to lead to desired goals, as well as methods for determining these goals themselves. To this end, we use mixed-methods designs and methods (analysis and design of algorithms, interdisciplinary principle extraction, knowledge representation, data science methods and human subjects studies, quantitative and qualitative methods).
Tasks include in particular:
- Participation in research and teaching
- Independent research on topics related to the Internet and society
- Contributions to scientific conferences and workshops
- Presentation of results at conferences and information events
- Organisation of scientific workshops
- Cooperation with other scientists in the field and its network, participation in projects
Requirements
- Successfully completed university degree in computer science (Master, Diplom or equivalent) or a comparable subject area
- Very good knowledge of Python, knowledge of common libraries for Data Science
- Very good knowledge of Machine Learning and Data Science
- Solid overview and knowledge of/skills in programming and database languages of the different paradigms (e.g. C/C++, Haskell, SPARQL)
- Good knowledge of modern web technologies, as well as experience in using software for creating UX / Ul prototypes (e.g. Figma, Adobe XD) and front-end development frameworks (e.g. Vue.js, React)
- Knowledge and experience in at least one of the following areas:
o Well-founded knowledge of and experience with fine-tuning and using language models / LLMs (e.g. T5, LLaMA), as well as knowledge of related libraries and frameworks (eg. Huggingface, PyTorch)
o Well-founded knowledge of privacy engineering and data protection - Sound knowledge of the current discourse on Al ethics
- The ability to teach in German and/or in English is required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills
Desired qualifications:
- Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration
- Experience as a tutor or exercise group leader is advantageous, preferably in courses with topics regarding the social
- Relevance of technology development
- Experience in companies or other organisations is advantageous
- Interest in ethical issues and social implications/ conditions of information technology, interest in the subject areas "Al for Social Good" and/or "NLP for Social Good"
- Enjoying teaching and working with students
- Ability to work independently and responsibly in a team, good self-organization
- Enthusiasm for working in an international and interdisciplinary environment
