Postdoctoral Researcher - AI for Scientific Communication and Knowledge Graphs (m/f/d)
Tasks
Your role
The Data Science & Digital Libraries Research Group conducts research at the intersection of knowledge representation, knowledge graphs, neurosymbolic AI and large language models. Our work focuses in particular on the scholarly and scientific domain, where we develop AI-based methods and tools for representing, analysing and using complex scientific information.
A key objective of our research is to improve the reasoning capabilities, robustness and interpretability of AI systems by combining symbolic and neural AI approaches. In this context, we investigate how knowledge graphs and large language models can be integrated to support reliable AI applications for scholarly research and scientific communication.
The position is partly funded through the EU-funded project FFplus - Fortissimo Plus and is embedded in TIB’s broader research activities on AI for scientific communication, knowledge graphs and large language models. In this context, the position contributes to the development, specialization and validation of HPC-supported AI/language models.
Your responsibilities will include
- Designing, developing and evaluating neurosymbolic AI methods and architectures
- Developing and integrating large language models (LLMs) into workflows for scholarly research and scientific communication
- Working with knowledge graphs and knowledge representation methods in the context of the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG)
- Developing data-driven and AI-based models to support the analysis, representation and use of scientific information
- Conducting experimental evaluations and documenting research results
- Publishing research results in international scientific journals and presenting them at conferences
- Contributing to research collaborations and, where appropriate, to third-party funding applications
Requirements
Your profile
- Completed academic university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, computational linguistics or a related field
- Completed doctoral degree / PhD in one of the above or a closely related field
- Research experience in neurosymbolic AI, large language models, knowledge graphs or related areas
- Strong programming skills, particularly in Python
- Experience with experimental evaluation and scientific methodology
- Very good written and spoken English skills
Desirable additions to your profile
- Experience with agent-based systems, distributed architectures or AI systems for scientific workflows
- Familiarity with AI-based tools in the scientific domain, reproducible research and scientific software development
- Experience in scholarly communication, scientific information infrastructures or related domains
- Experience in interdisciplinary research collaboration
- German language skills are a plus, but not necessary

Postdoctoral Researcher - AI for Scientific Communication and Knowledge Graphs (m/f/d)
to join the Data Science and Digital Libraries Research Group (Prof. Dr. Sören Auer) at the earliest possible date.
The position is initially limited to 2 years in accordance with the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG) and is intended to support the successful candidate’s further scientific qualification. An extension is possible. The regular weekly working hours are 39.8 hours (full-time). The position is generally suitable for part-time work. The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 of the collective agreement for the public service of the German states (TV-L).
